Director of Operations Appointed
SAC is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Kendellen (click here to meet Mike) to the position of Director of Operations. Mike joined the SAC staff on June 19, 2002. Mike has over 25 years experience in the fields of relief, development and humanitarian aid and was chosen from a strong field of candidates.

SAC invites you to visit the site www.sac-na.org and encourages you to contact us with any comments, suggestions, and/or errata. Copy editors challenge: An official SAC ball point pen (it is already a collector's item in some circles) will be awarded to the person identifying the most errors that escaped the SAC copy editing cooperative.

Training Team Departs for 3 Months in the Field
Saeed Ahmad PhD, Tom Haythornthwaite, and Mike Kendellen have completed their intensive orientation training by the SAC senior staff and social science consultant, Aldo Benini PhD, and have now departed for three months in the field (visit the SAC website to meet the team). The team is presently in Hargeisa, Somaliland to conduct senior staff training along with their respective implementing partners. Training sessions in Eritrea and Ethiopia will follow in succession. where DDG is the Danish Demining Group, UNMEE is the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea, EMAP is the Eritrean Mine Action Programme, and NPA is the Norweigan People's Aid.

Somalia, Eritrea, and Ethiopia LIS Surveys in Start-Up Phase
Three landmine impact surveys (LIS) are underway and currently are in the setup/hiring/training stages. More focus will be directed to news from these three surveys in the next newsletter!

Bosnia-Herzegovina LIS Survey
The SAC Nominating Committee for Selecting an Implementing Partner will make its recommendation to the Board of Directors. Once the partner is appointed by the SAC Board, the contracts will be signed and operations will begin. Funding is provided by the European Commission (EC) and the US Dept. of State (PMHDP) through the International Trust Fund.

Azerbaijan LIS Survey
SAC is near final negotiations with the UNDP country office to commence this LIS survey with funding by the EC.

Afghanistan LIS Survey
SAC Executive Director, Bob Eaton, is spending the last week of June in Kabul making final plans for this survey.

Angola LIS Survey
The Advanced Survey Mission (ASM), a precursor to the LIS, is scheduled to commence in September 2002.
