Data collection completed in Somaliland; final interviews conducted
for the coordination team in Angola;
protocol revisions reviewed; GLS Evaluation proposals received; Mike Kendellen began trip to Azerbaijan, Ethiopia, and Somalia.
Afghanistan
The Survey Action Center (SAC), UNDP-Kabul, and Mine Clearance Planning Agency (MCPA) are currently preparing the working
agreement to begin a landmine impact survey (LIS).
Angola
SAC conducted final interviews for Survey Coordinator and Field Coordinator. The Angola LIS project document was translated
into Portugeuse and sent to CNIDAH.
Azerbaijan
Data collection continued, with 65% completion as of 31 January. Mike Kendellen met with IEPF, ANAMA and the SAC team while
in Azerbaijan from 28-31 January. Mike also observed IEPF teams conducting the survey in the field.
Bosnia-Herzegovina
The Expert Opinion Collection (EOC) phase of the LIS, that defines the communities to be visited, is nearing completion. The
translation of the survey instruments into local languages is on-going. Saeed Ahmad and Tom Haythornthwaite, the SAC training
team, arrived in Sarajevo on 22 January to prepare for the senior field staff training which finished on 7 February.
Eritrea
Interviewer recruitment continued and training will begin in February. Tom Haythornthwaite will
travel to Eritrea for these sessions.
Ethiopia
EOC and Interviewer recruitment continued.
Somalia
Data collection was completed on 31 January. Security problems in the eastern parts of the country have rendered some areas
inaccessible and prevented survey operations from being conducted there. During the month of February, data analysis and the final
report writing will commence.
Survey Working Group (SWG)
The meeting of the SWG is scheduled for the first week in February 2003.
SWG Protocols
The first draft of the protocol editing is complete and will be presented to the SWG at their February meeting.
GLS Evaluation
The Global Landmine Survey (GLS) Evaluation Steering Committee received proposals to conduct an evaluation of the GLS process.
The Steering Committee will select the evaluators in February.
