Afghanistan and Angola continue data collection; Eritrea report ready for printing; Ethiopia report under review;
Somalia (Phase 2) continues setup with an eye on security situation.
Afghanistan
As of the end of October, over 90% of the planned data collection has been completed. Due to security concerns, ten districts (3%),
mainly in the south and southeast, will not be surveyed. Data entry has been completed for 2,143 community surveys with 13%
reporting high-impact, 21% medium-impact, and 66% low-impact. In the last two years, 2,277 landmine/UXO victims have been
reported in 658 of these communities with 41% being fatalities.
Angola
Data collection continues with 400 surveys entered into IMSMA. In addition for quality checking, 454 communities have been
visited as part of sampling for false negatives, of which only 4% of the samples have uncovered contaminated communities.
An operational review will take place in Luanda on 15-16 November.
Eritrea
Both the UNDP Mine Action Capacity Building Program and the Eritrean government have completed their review of the draft of the
final report. The report will be submitted for printing in early November.
Ethiopia
Ethiopian Mine Action Office (EMAO) reviewing final report.
Somalia (Phase 2: Bari, Nugaal and Mudug Regions)
Equipment procurement is nearly complete. Senior staff recruitment and further review of the affected communities to survey is
underway. Security briefings held in UN compound to discuss the current environment and procedures. SAC Director for Survey
Mike Kendellen visits Garowe from 6-15 October for consultation, planning and shareholder meetings. Richard Cassidy, the
Quality Assurance Monitor for Phase 2, attends training held by SAC and the UN in Takoma Park on 27-28 October.
Survey Working Group
The SWG is scheduled to meet in Sarajevo on 11 November 2004.
Survey Action Center

Survey Coordinator in Angola, visited Colombia to conduct a fact finding mission to assess the need and interest in developing
a plan to conduct an LIS.
