Afghanistan and Angola continue data collection; Bosnia report submitted for printing; Eritrea and Ethiopia final reports in review phase; and Somalia (Phase 2) LIS gets underway.

Afghanistan
As of 22 August, the survey data from 1,722 affected communities have been recorded in the LIS database (15% high impact, 21% medium impact, 64% low impact). Two thousand recent victims (within past two years) have been reported with 40% fatalities. One third of the affected communities report one or more recent victims. Nearly 30% of the Suspected Hazard Areas are located at the top of mountains. To date the survey has submitted 228 Spot UXO reports to MAPA for action

Angola
Data collection continued with HALO Trust completing Huambo province and moving on to Benguela; NPA is operating in Malanje; MAG in Moxico, Santa Barbara Foundation in Cunene; and InterSOS in Huila. Development Workshop (DW) is scheduled to commence the Task Assessment and Planning project in Huambo in September. Cranfield Mine Action will visit soon to help begin the strategic planning process.

Bosnia-Herzegovina
The BiH final report has received UN certification and has been submitted for printing.

Eritrea
UNDP Mine Action Capacity Building Program reviewing draft of the final report prior to submittal to the Eritrean government.

Ethiopia
Ethiopian Mine Action Office (EMAO) reviewing final report.

Somalia (Phase 2: Bari, Nugaal and Mudug regions)
The LIS team of Almedina Komić, Neven Redzic, and Mohamed A. Hussein were in Takoma Park for orientation from 16-18 August. Click here for a web page with links for you to meet the staff. The SAC team then proceeded to Garowe to officially kickoff the survey on 22 August.
