Democratic Republic of Congo

With funding from Canada, SAC will conduct an enhanced survey in selected districts in 2008. Handicap International
– Belgium has been selected to conduct the survey.
Somalia (Phase 3: Sanaag & Sool regions)
[funded by EC through UNDP/UNOPS]
The final report has been drafted and reviewed by UNDP and the Somaliland and Puntland Mine Action Centers. As soon as
the review is completed the UN Certification Committee will meet prior to printing and distributing the report.
Sudan
[funded by Canada, UNMAS]
Mines Advisory Group continues field work in Warrap, Lakes, Central Equatoria and West Equatoria. The SAC team of
Damien Vallette d’Osia, Akram Amiri, and Mustafa Bawar continue their work with the MAG LIS team.
Victim Reduction Model
[funded by U.S. Department of State]
The project is building on the current analytical work of the Survey Action Center to develop and test a model
that will permit national authorities to use LIS data to project probabilities of future mine incidents in
communities identified by the LIS. The field work to evaluate the model’s predictive capability has commenced
in Afghanistan. Executive Director Bob Eaton traveled with Johns Hopkins University intern, Dang Ngo, to Kabul
to kick off the field work. Dang will continue the field work through early February.
Impact Scoring Alternatives
[funded by U.S. Department of State]
The project proceeds using the databases from the LIS in Angola, Afghanistan and Eritrea to test the statistical
significance of including additional variables in the impact scoring system that are not currently part of the
SWG protocol.
Mine Information Matrix
[contracted by Marshall Legacy Institute with
funding from the U.S. Department of State]
SAC, Marshall Legacy Institute, and James Madison University – Mine Action Information Center continue
researching key mine affected countries. The team has solicited responses from the Advisory Panel and
is incorporating these comments into the report.
Survey Action Center
Bob Eaton traveled to Ottawa to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Mine Ban Treaty. He participated
in a two day workshop organized by CIDA and Handicap International – Canada on Development and Mine Action.
